For my Foundations of Writing course I have had to meet certain goals. These goals have demonstrated my progress in writing for specific purposes, using language appropriate for my genre, using evidence to support arguments, interpret and compose a variety of media and print/non-print genres, and to describe and apply writing processes both individually and in collaborative contexts.
For Goal A I was asked to write for a specific audience and purpose. I was able to show my ability to do this specifically in my timeline genre. I was aware of my audience’s lack of knowledge of some of the recording terminology. To resolve this I put explanations of every different type of audio formats to help my peers gain some familiarity within my topic. This is important because without a general understanding of the terminology it would lessen the impact of what the timeline is trying to show my audience. This was rewarding because my future career in ITM it is very possible that I may be presenting something that might be more technically advanced than what my peers might have a familiarity with.
For Goal B I was asked to write using language and conventions that are appropriate to my genre. An example of how I used this goal during the course is my journal entry. This specifically is a good example because I used the “voice” and style of writing of someone that is appropriate for a journal entry. I was able to use conventions and language that were appropriate by being more informal for a personal journal entry. I used this in my genre here” I finally got the gear today! That felt like it was forever. Anyway, I'm going to go set everything up and try and get it all working! I'll be back.....” This was somewhat difficult to do because I had to use the “voice” of an expert audio engineer while also trying to use the language of someone because less formal.
For Goal C I was asked to be able to read, select and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments. I was able to do this well within my interview genre. I was able to achieve this goal by using the prior interviews with this expert audio engineer to help formulate evidence and support my answers. I used these prior interviews to help formulate questions that are relevant to my topic and answers that are supporting both prior texts, and my project. For my project this was especially challenging because of the opinionated nature of my topic. Cyphering through the different opinions to be able to formulate accurate answers was difficult but rewarding.
For Goal D I was asked to be able to interpret and compose a variety of media and print/non-print genres. For this goal I think my timeline adequately portrays this goal by using pictures and symbols along with the text and definitions to convey my point in a clearer matter. I was able to use non-print elements within my professional genre as well. For example I used audio clips and tables to help clarify and gather data on my topic. This was one of the more enjoyable goals for my topic because of the opinionated aspect of my project. I think I could use this in my major because of the diagrams for computer systems in telecommunications. Using non-print and print elements can make layouts easier to read and understand.
For Goal E I was asked to describe and apply appropriate writing processes, both individually and in collaborative contexts. In doing this I was able to take feedback from my peers and effectively apply it to my genres. I found this helpful especially in my journal genre because it helped me connect with how the “voice” should be in a journal entry. My first draft was drier and did not have the same emotion that my second draft has because of the feedback that I was able to apply in a collaborative context. Individually I was able to use these goals and the three IN’s to better my papers, and advance myself as a writer. This was helpful because of the detailed feedback I got from my peers. The revision sheets and peer review papers were very important steps in the writing process. This is important for my career because working in ITM and getting multiple ideas and perspectives is important for any job that has collaborative work.
In conclusion, I was able to use the goals to help make my topic more professional and relevant. I could see myself using multiple genres in my future career because only using one style of writing is inefficient in the world of technology. Using pictures and other types of multimedia is an important part in any technology field. I think that I have learned a lot about writing professionally, and effectively using these goals within the scope of my topic, and project.
